Tiger I Combat Lifespan: Why Germany’s Heavy Tank Failed | WION Podcast

The legendary Tiger I fought for less than three years, entering combat against Soviet forces near Leningrad before surviving until Nazi Germany’s surrender in 1945. Despite its fearsome armour and firepower, mechanical failures plagued the heavy tank from its earliest battlefield deployments. Enormous fuel consumption, transmission problems and difficult logistics often forced crews to abandon or destroy their own Tigers. Production ended in 1944 as Germany shifted toward the heavier Tiger II, although surviving Tiger Is continued fighting until the war’s final days. Its brief combat career shows how even one of World War II’s most feared tanks could be defeated by problems far beyond enemy fire.
